De tweede stap.
Een eerste gesprek met de leerplichtambtenaar.
Nou ja, tweede stap? Een eerste moment om wat informatie in te winnen: over welke mogelijkheden wij hebben om op reis te gaan. Want dat we gaan is zeker. Onze intentie is om samen te werken met alle instanties binnen de wettelijke kaders. Om samen een ‘good practice’ vorm te geven.
In mijn beeldscherm verschijnt een melding, netjes een uur voordat ik heb gepland te bellen met Bart Verbeek, adviseur bij de leerplicht. Ik rond mijn laatste schrijfsels af, pak mijn spullen en loop richting strand. Ergens ben ik wat nerveus. En als ik dat gevoel heb zoek ik altijd een omgeving waar ik me vrij kan voelen.
De telefoon gaat over en als Bart aangeeft dat hij de ruimte heeft, brand ik los: als gezin gaan we op reis. Wij als leerkracht, maar bovenal ouders, gaan op ontdekkings-/studiereis. Op zoek naar de essentie van onderwijs en opvoeding. En dan is het meer dan logisch dat we onze kinderen meenemen. In verschillende Scandinavische landen willen we hen les geven binnen de scholen aldaar. Want wij als ouders zien het als onze plicht onze kinderen volwassen en vaardig in de wereld te zetten. En daar hoort leren bij.
Met zijn eerste twee vragen zoekt hij naar verheldering. Of we binnen deze scholen ook andere kinderen les gaan geven? Deze vraag overvalt me. En het is fijn dat hij direct doorgaat met zijn tweede vraag, waardoor ik de eerste vraag nog wat op me in kan laten werken. Nooit over nagedacht eigenlijk. En toch stiekem wel over gedroomd. Want daar waar we van waarde kunnen zijn delen we graag onze ervaringen en kennis!
Zijn tweede vraag gaat over of we enkel onze kinderen les gaan geven binnen verschillende scholen. En ja, dit is het geval. Voor nu. En met deze bevestiging volgt eigenlijk direct de marge van het oprekken van het wettelijk kader. ‘De marge is klein,’ zo klinkt het aan de andere kant van de lijn. Dat de kansen wellicht nog kleiner zijn wordt aangevuld.
Als ik Inge deze boodschap deel geeft ze aan het toch wel spannend te vinden. En ja, dat is het ook! Nieuwe paden bewandelen is altijd spannend. En ja, ik ben het met haar eens dat het niet hoopvol klinkt. Toch focus ik mezelf liever op de uitzonderingen die er wel zijn. Deze bieden perspectief zolang we die nog niet onderzocht hebben!?
Er is dus ruimte! En we gaan ook nog niet van vandaag op morgen weg, dus hebben nog even de tijd om onze zaken op orde te brengen. Bart vult, in navolging van de directeur van de school van onze kinderen, aan dat een mogelijk een wetswijziging pas daar is als onze kinderen niet meer leerplichtig zijn. Nou, als we dan met een good practice kunnen bijdragen aan dit proces zou dat natuurlijk mooi zijn.
Bart e-mailt ons een gearceerde versie van de leerplichtwet. Dat wat gearceerd is zijn mogelijke opties. Een nieuwe studie kan worden gestart: rechten. ?

A call with the attendance officer.
Well, the second step? It’s the first time for us to get some more information about the law, regarding to compulsory education. About the possibilities of our journey when we go traveling and educating our kids in different schools within different cities in Scandinavia. That we will go on tour, is for sure. This choice has already been made. But it’s our intention to cooperate with all parties within the legal framework of our Dutch educational system! Maybe, it will even be a good practice for our Ministry of Education on this topic, compulsory education, linked to our quest.
A notification to call with Bart Verbeek, advisor of compulsory education, appears on my screen. I finish some last writings, get my stuff and walk towards the beach. Somehow I’m a little bit nervous. And when I have to do new things or calling new people I’m always looking for a place where I can feel free. This time, my place of freedom is at the beach.
When I called Bart he said he had got time to hear our story and answer our questions. So I told him that we, as a family, are going to travel through Scandinavia. That we as parents and teachers (because that’s our profession) are going to explore the educational system in different countries. In search of the essence of education. Of course, we are going to take our children on this adventure. In several Scandinavian countries we would like to educate them in the schools over there. We believe that a learning process is not linked to one place. Therefor, we would like to give them all the possibilities to make them mature and skilled for this world.
With his two questions he sought clarification. The first question was about if we were also going to teach other children within these schools? This question caught me. He went straight to his second question, which gave me some time to rethink the first question. Never really had thought about it. Maybe secretly dreamt of it. But, who knows, we might visit places where we could share our knowledge! That would be amazing!
His second question was, whether we were only going to teach our children by ourselves in schools. I confirmed this question by saying ‘yes’. He responded to my answer by telling me that the margin in stretching the legal framework would be quite small! The chances might be even smaller…
When I shared this message with Inge she became uncertain. Walking new trails is always exciting. I agree with her that it does not sound hopeful. Yet I would rather focus on the exceptions. Luckily, there are a few. Exceptions provide perspective and as long as we haven’t tested them yet, there is still a way.
As long as we do not go on tour tomorrow, we have a time to put things right. In the future there might be a possible change in the law of compulsory education, according to Bart. The director of the school of our children mentioned the same. It would be nice, if we could contribute in a possible change it the near future, while our children still in the school age.
Bart promised to send us a shaded version of the Compulsory Education Act. When we receive the shaded version, we will see what our options are. And at mean time I am thinking of a new study to start with…law studies.
